Purchasing a 1972 Datsun 510 2 Door Build Bluebird

Accidentally found a 1972 Datsun 510 2 Door Bluebird

I was recently browsing for Datsun 280zx parts on craigslist in my area when I stumbled across a Datsun 510 2 door for sale. The 510 is quite rare, especially for a 2 door. I’d hunted for a Datsun 510 before I bought the 81 Datsun 280zx but always came up empty-handed.

I called the owner and to my surprise, he still had the vehicle. He had lots of inquiries, but the 510 came in pieces with quite a few extra parts. Shipping during a pandemic is not cheap. However, I was only 3 hours away and had access to rent a U-haul along with a flatbed. I drove out a few days later and sealed the deal.

The Datsun 510 wasn’t in bad shape at all. There was some rust in the floorboards, but not nearly as much as my Datsun 280zx. The Datsun 510 was pretty much an empty shell. The only items left were the body panels, wheels, and steering components.

The Datsun 510 Parts List

The 510 came with quite a few parts, so it’s going to be quite a build. Here’s the list:

  • Z24 Engine Block with 1800 cylinder head assembled with intake and carb ready to install
  • An extra engine block and cylinder heads unassembled
  • An extra carburetor
  • Four different transmissions
  • Two rear differentials
  • Two driveshafts
  • An extra door with glass
  • Two extra front wheel fenders
  • Three sets of wheels and tires
  • And some miscellaneous smaller parts

The initial goal is to clear the old wiring harness and brake lines from the engine bay. Then we’ll move onto some light sanding and lay down a fresh coat of paint in the engine bay. More content to come soon, so stay tuned and
